Call for Tutorial Proposals

This call is closed

The ECCB’14 Tutorial Chair invites proposals for one-day Tutorials, to be held on Saturday 06 or Sunday 07 September, 2014, which will immediately precede the thirteenth European Conference on Computational Biology in Strasbourg.

The purpose of the tutorial program is to provide participants with lectures and hands-on training covering topics relevant to the field of bioinformatics. Each tutorial will offer participants an opportunity to learn about new areas of bioinformatics research, to get an introduction to important established topics, or to develop advanced skills in areas they are already familiar with.

This call is an invitation for scientists and professionals working in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology to submit proposals for high quality tutorials for ECCB‚Äô14. Previous tutorials have covered topics including ‚ÄúProtein Evolution: From Sequence to Structure to Function‚ÄĚ, ‚ÄúApplications of Bio-Ontologies in Large-Scale Data-Driven Science: A Practical Introduction‚ÄĚ, ‚ÄúReads to Biological Patterns: End-to-End Differential Expression‚ÄĚ, ‚ÄúAnalysis of RNA Sequencing Data Using Bioconductor‚ÄĚ, and ‚ÄúEditing Wikipedia for Scientists‚ÄĚ.

Tutorials are scheduled either on Saturday, September 6 or on Sunday, September 7, from 9:00 to 17:00, with two half-hour coffee breaks and a one-hour lunch break.

Proposal Submission

Tutorial proposals should not exceed 4 pages, and must include

  • a detailed description of the tutorial (title and abstract, giving the motivation, expected goals, and level)
  • provisional schedule
  • material or infrastructure required (if relevant)
  • intended audience and possible prerequisites
  • a brief CV of the instructor(s) showing their relevant qualifications and teaching experience
  • contact information for the organizer.

A maximum of two presenters per tutorial is recommended.

An evaluation committee will consider the following criteria in assessing proposals: relevance to ECCB attendees, educational experience of the lecturers, effectiveness and completeness of the proposed approach, as well as the overall clarity and quality of the proposal.

Please note that tutorial attendees often consider the presenters’ reputations and standing when choosing particular sessions. It is consequently expected that the presenters listed on the submitted proposal will present their tutorials in person.

Logistics

Tutorials will take place on September 6 or 7, 2014 on the site of the main conference or close to it. ECCB will help in the administrative aspects of assigning the rooms, making announcements, and publishing the detailed tutorial schedule in the conference program. Each tutorial (not speaker) will be provided with up to two free tutorial registrations for speakers.

The tutorial registration fee will be 110 ‚ā¨ per person (60 ‚ā¨ reduced price for students) to cover costs for the room, coffee breaks, lunch, a PC and projector. Organizers should provide slides and possible reference material in PDF format.

IMPORTANT: CHANGE FOR PROVISION OF SLIDES AND REFERENCE MATERIAL (June 2nd, 2014). The ECCB 2014 organizing committee has decided not to provide USB keys to the conference attendees but to allow them to download the conference proceedings in advance on their laptop or pads. For this reason the slides and reference material for the tutorials will not be included on a USB key but should rather be made available for download from each tutorial web page. The organizers can easily edit their web page with links to these documents. If they want the documents to be downloaded from the eccb'14 web site itself they should send a unique assembled pdf file to  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before July 31st, 2014 and indicate the place on their web page where the link for download should appear.

If requested by the organizers, the conference can prepare photocopied handouts of up to 50 pages for each tutorial participant including copies of slides and tutorial outlines and/or explanations, assuming that the original documents are available before July 1st, 2014. Copies of relevant articles/book chapters published by the tutors may not be used as a substitute for tutorial hand-out material. However, such copies may be distributed at organizers’ expenses as Supplementary Information provided that copyright permission from the relevant publisher has been granted.

Tutorial organizers are expected to operate within the context of ECCB procedures, including finalizing the program and providing materials by the deadlines. ECCB reserves the right to cancel a scheduled tutorial if, by one month before the conference, its number of registered participants is less than 10.

Copyright

Note that organizers are responsible for ensuring that the material they submit for downloading and photocopying may be legally used, and that appropriate copyright permissions have been obtained. Lecturers will grant copyright of tutorial materials to the ECCB’14 for a period to extend from acceptance through December 2014, and they agree that their materials may be made available in any form by the conference to the participants of ECCB’14.
