Call for Workshop Proposals

This call is closed

The ECCB’14 Workshop Chair invites proposals for one-day Workshops, to be held on Saturday 06 or Sunday 07 September, 2014, which will immediately precede the thirteenth European Conference on Computational Biology in Strasbourg.

The workshops are expected to provide participants with an informal setting to discuss technical issues, exchange research ideas, and to share practical experiences on a range of focused or emerging topics in bioinformatics.

Each workshop should provide an interesting perspective on the cutting edge of a selected research field. A workshop may or may not cover a topic that is also addressed in the main conference ‚ÄĒ if it does, it should cover the topic more extensively than the main conference does. Workshops may include any form of presentation such as talks or panel discussions. Previous sessions have covered for instance ‚ÄúAnnotation, Interpretation and Management of Mutations (AIMM)‚ÄĚ, ‚ÄúBioinformatics Training for Life Scientists: Showcases and Challenges from Tutors‚Äô Perspectives‚ÄĚ, ‚ÄúImaging Analysis and Computational Modeling for Cancer and its Therapy‚ÄĚ, ‚ÄúMachine Learning and Systems Biology‚ÄĚ.

The organizer(s) of a workshop will be fully responsible for the workshop’s scientific content: they may invite speakers or call for submissions or combine the two options. Workshops are scheduled either on Saturday, September 6, or on Sunday, September 7, from 9:00 to 17:00, with two half-hour coffee breaks and a one-hour lunch break. In exceptional and well-justified cases, two-day workshops may be scheduled from Saturday (September 6) to Sunday (September 7).

  • Description of the target audience and expected audience numbers
  • List of tentative speakers and / or attendees (if available)

  • Selection mode for contributions (invitation, call for submissions)
  • Relevant experience of the organizing committee
  • Tentative organizing committee members (at least 2 to 3 members)

An evaluation committee will consider the following criteria in assessing proposals: relevance to ECCB attendees, the expertise and experience of the organizers' / lecturers' themselves, the completeness of their proposed organization, along with the clarity and quality of the proposal. The likely success of the proposed workshop will also be taken into account.

Logistics

All workshops will take place on September 6 or 7, 2014 at the site of the main conference or close to it. ECCB will help with the administrative aspects of assigning  rooms, making announcements, and with the publication of the detailed schedule in the conference program, but it cannot financially support the workshop speakers or organizers in their travel and accommodation costs. ECCB strongly encourages workshop organizers to seek independent funding for travel and accommodation, and to include any commitment that they may have secured in the proposal.

The workshop registration fee will be 110 ‚ā¨ per person (60 ‚ā¨ reduced price for students) to cover costs for the room, coffee breaks, lunch, a PC and projector, copying handouts if requested, and USB keys. Workshop registration is free for its organisers (up to two persons) and for invited speakers.

Workshop organizers are invited to prepare abstracts and any additional written material that will be presented on-line at the start of their workshop. Organizers are also kindly asked to collect slides and reference material in PDF format from speakers.

IMPORTANT: CHANGE FOR PROVISION OF SLIDES AND REFERENCE MATERIAL (June 2nd, 2014). The ECCB 2014 organizing committee has decided not to provide USB keys to the conference attendees but to allow them to download the conference proceedings in advance on their laptop or pads. For this reason the slides and reference material for the workshops will not be included on a USB key but should rather be made available for download from each workshop web page. The organizers can easily edit their web page with links to the documents corresponding to the presentations. If they want the documents to be downloaded from the eccb'14 web site itself they should send a unique assembled pdf file to  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before July 31st, 2014 and indicate the place on their web page where the link for download should appear.

If requested in advance by the organizers, the conference can prepare photocopied handouts of up to 50 pages for each workshop participant, assuming that the original documents are available before July 1st, 2014. Note that organizers are responsible for ensuring that all material submitted for download or for photocopying may be legally used, and that appropriate copyright permissions have been obtained.

Workshop organizers are expected to operate within the context of ECCB procedures, including finalizing the program, providing materials by the deadlines, working within the budget, etc. ECCB reserves the right to cancel a scheduled workshop if, by one month before the conference, its number of registered participants is less than 15.
