Meeting point and description of the tour

The meeting point for either day is 9:40am Kintzheim at the bus stop ‚ÄúPlace de la Batteuse‚ÄĚ (see below for how to get there). Starting from Kintzheim (part of the Alsace Wine Route) we will be hiking through vineyards and make our way on winding paths to the castle of Haut-Koenigsburg located just above the town (755m above sea level). The entire ascent should take us no more than 3hrs and we can take scenic stops en-route. This castle was first mentioned in the 12th and has been fought over several times (e.g. during the Thirty Years War). It has been rebuilt extensively at the beginning of the 20th century by William II of Hohenzollern and offers a great display of the way of life at that time including a ceramic stove with a built-in heated seat, a selection of furniture, china, weapons, smithies and armor. From the castle grounds we are hopefully lucky enough to admire the view of the Vosges and the surrounding villages.

After a reviving tour of the castle and a snack (please organize your own drinks, snacks and sun protection), we will start our descent on a direct route towards Kintzheim, where we will have dinner. Kintzheim and the nearby towns offer splendid accommodation if you wish to stay for the night either before or after the conference.

Please note that this is a private endeavor and not linked to the ECCB14 organization. You therefore must book your hotel and train personally (see details below).

 Preparations ahead of the trip

¬†Please organize your own drinks, snacks and sun protection. Please also select a suitable accommodation within the vicinity of Kintzheim or take the train early enough from Strasbourg to Selestat (for online tickets see www.sncf.com). From Selestat there is a bus service ‚Äúligne 500‚ÄĚ taking you to the city center of Kintzheim. We will leave around 9.45 from the bus stop ‚ÄúPlace de la Batteuse‚ÄĚ. The first bus from Selestat station¬†leaves 9.25 just outside the station and arrives 9.37 at the second stop "Place de la Batteuse" .

For those of you that are not well enough on foot for the whole trip, but still like to enjoy the Alsacien wine region ligne 500 takes you all the way to the Castle. There we would meet for the snack, the castle tour and then back in town again for dinner, if you like to join for company in a nice setting.
